SHORT CHAIN FATTY ACIDS are small, organic acids produced in the gastrointestinal tract of humans and other omnivorous animals (such as dogs and pigs) by the bacterial fermentation of carbohydrates. There are three main acids – acetic acid, propionic acid and BUTYRIC ACID. As well as providing energy, these acids promote a favourable environment within the large bowel. The production of butyric acid (butyrate) is thought to be especially important in promoting bowel health and preventing disease.
